If you like to make everyday a special day, then check out brownielocks.com, one of my personal favorite sites for looking up silly, fun, and off the wall holidays one can celebrate.

Sunday October 21st, is World Apple Day. What is World Apple Day? I'm not talk about the new iPhone, but a whole day devoted to celebrating all the wondrous goodness an apple can bring to your life. I have complied some fun ideas to help you celebrate.

*As a side note I am not a doctor and have not verified nor endorse any suggestions listed below. I strongly suggest seeking the advice of a true doctor before attempting any health or beauty suggestions listed below but found the information interesting enough to share.

Arts & Crafts

Make an apple core magnet with your kids.

Talk about the parts of an apple.
The skin, the meat or flesh, the stem, core, and seeds.

Pull out the paint and make some apple stamps
I love the way this apple stamp come out by alphamom.com, but don't feel bad if your little Picasso's doesn't come out as neatly.

What you need
paper
paint - red, green, yellow
apples
a small leaf

How to make it
1. slice your apples in half down the middle
2. dip your apple slice in your paint
3. stamp apple on paper
4. paint leaf
5. stamp on leaf

While you have the paints out, make an apple tree.
This is very similar to my version using the whole hand and part of the arm. These also makes really cute Autumn trees.

What you need
White paper
Brown paint for tree
Green paint for leaves
Red paint for apples

How to make it
1. Paint your child's hand and part of arm brown.
2. Press the arm and hand down on the paper to create the tree trunk
3. Using the green paint, let your child dip a finger in green paint making leaves
4. Using the red paint, let your child dip a finger in the paint making the apples in the tree

Fun with Food

Kids love to be in the kitchen, at least in my house. Here are some fun, and yummy ideas.

My favorite Apple Pie recipe from http://www.joyofbaking.com/

I will tell you tho, I cheat some times and use store bought crust. (GASP)

I haven't tried this yet, but doesn't it look yummy!

And finally what would World Apple Day be if you didn't make caramel apples!

We made caramel apple slices although they came out looking like a huge gloppy pile of caramel with some sprinkles, nuts, chocolate chips and coconut with some slivers of apples slices buried somewhere underneath it all, the kids love it!

A simple recipe is to take 14oz of wrapped caramel. Melt them in the microwave with 2 tablespoons of water for about 1.5 minutes, stir microwave for about another 30 seconds or until all the caramel is melted.

You could skewer the apple slices with a long tooth pick or coffee straw so the kids don't get burnt and dip them into the caramel. We just spooned globs onto ours, followed by an array of toppings. They didn't last long enough to pictures.

Here is the basket to gather them all.
(use arms to form basket)

Health & Beauty*

According to worldappleday.org, it is said that apple cider vinegar can increase the circulation of blood, help rid bad cholesterol, aids in keeping blood pressure under control, helps keep bones healthy and strong, will offset the uric acid that tends to collect around body joints and cause joint pain, can help fight arthritis, help lower the toxicity in the body and contribute to overall health, fight the ravages of free radicals.

It is often it is used as a final rinse after shampooing hair and restores life and luster to the scalp and hair.

Apples helps to neutralize food odors. The fibers also serve as a natural dental floss.

Don't Be Fooled!

Tomorrow is April 1st, which will put most on high alert and on the look out for sneaky pranks to be pulled through the day. Tho the origins of All Fools Day is unknown, there have been many theories, stories and even pranks pulled on unexpected victims looking for answers about this strange unofficial holiday. I've never been one to get into elaborate pranks, but I'm thinking tomorrow just might be the year I start. I'm going to share some fun ideas you can pull on your kiddos tomorrow.

Very Hungry Caterpillar Day

March 20th marks the 42nd publishing anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Many libraries, book store and even children's museums may be celebrating the event with special storytimes and crafts.

Looking for something to do at home with the kiddos try some of these
fun ideas:

Make Your Chai Version of the Very Hungry Caterpillar: This creature makes a fun first-time gardening project while bringing a little bit of spring into your home. Super easy craft found at familyfun.com/magazine

Chop your way thru a special snack while reading. If you and your kiddo find fun to eat snacks around themes you may want to add Muffin Tin Monday to you todo list. It the American version of the Japanese bento box meal, except its served in a muffin tin for kids.

The weather is starting to get nice and all the little buggy creatures will start to stir. Talk to your kids about the life cycle of a caterpillar. All you need to make a fun life cycle project is a paper plate, The butterfly is a bowtie noodle for the butterfly, a shell noodle for the chrysalis , piece of rice for the eggs and use a rotini noodle for the caterpillar.

Talk Math and Days of the week. How many strawberries did he eat. Count them out and write out the numbers.
What day did he eat them on?

Make art! Get out he paper and paint and create your own version of the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Use your hands, round sponges, blow up a balloon and dip it in paint.

There are so many wonderfully fun ideas you can explore with your kiddos while enjoying this children's classic. Happy Very Hungry Caterpillar Day!

Celebrating St. Patrick's Day

Feeling a little Irish this week? It could be because our favorite Green day is approaching and everyone is Irish for 24 hours. I have always loved St. Patrick's Day, and now I love it for a whole other reason. Celebrating with my kids! St. Patrick's Day can be such a fun holiday to celebrate with kids. There's so many ideas that can be incorporated into art projects, games, activities and just for the fun. Some popular topics would be to explore the color green, rainbows, scavenger hunts, leprechauns, and the Irish culture.
My Awesome Rainbow Cupcakes
with Lucky Coins.

With so many ideas it's hard to decided what we'll be doing but I think I've narrowed it down to enjoying some Rainbow Cupcakes and I have to say I'm pretty darn proud of them (see picture to the right), we'll go on a Lucky Coin Hunt, might make a Leprechaun trap, create a fun rainbow art project, color some shamrocks, break out the glitter and glue and enjoy our traditional dinner of Corned Beef, Cabbage, Carrots and Potatoes. Yum! Can't wait for Thursday now. Happy St. Patrick's Day, Stay Safe!

What We Did Wednesday: Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

Well if you didn't know today, March 2nd is Dr. Seuss's birthday and I'm a bit late in posting this but we've had such a fun filled day today. Dr. Seuss born Theodor Seuss Geisel in 1904, published 44 children's books in his time that are still loved and read everyday. In conjunction with the beloved author's birthday, March 2 is also the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. Now if you missed out on the celebration today, March is National Reading Month and you can have your own celebration all month long. Read as many of your favorite Dr. Seuss book and building activities from them for a day of fun and games.

Picture snagged from
http://kitchendoughdough.blogspot.com/

Today we had a Suesstacular celebration, green eggs and all! We created a Green Eggs and Ham placemat by coloring this printable placemat. Glued it to a 11x17 bright green sheet of construction paper and covered it with low tack contact paper on both sides to protect it from spills. We read and enjoyed our own green eggs and ham, some jiggly wiggly jello, and crazy Thing 1 & Thing 2 cupcakes, so sweet your teeth will hurt just looking at them, but oh so yummy. We colored other Dr. Seuss character sheets and ended the night watching original Dr. Seuss cartoons. I had planned to play our Dr. Seuss board games but there are only so many hours in a day, so our celebration just may continue tomorrow.
